Sandra's right--the large character is Chinese for "tea." Japanese use Chinese characters, which they call "Kanji" (literally, "Chinese characters") in one of their writing systems, and here it means the same thing and is used the same way.
The writing in the background is upside down and Japanese (I can't read it).
